Advocating for Justice, Empowerment & Balance
Maggie Banda’s journey into legal advocacy did not begin in a courtroom but was driven by a deep passion for justice. Though not a lawyer by profession, her work with a women’s rights organisation across seven Southern African countries exposed her to critical issues of legal reform, policy, and access to justice. This experience led her to establish the Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WLRC), an organisation dedicated to supporting women and girls in navigating the legal system.
WLRC operates on three key pillars:
🔹 Legal Justice – Providing legal education, advice, and representation for women facing challenges such as divorce, child maintenance, and gender-based violence.
🔹 Economic Justice – Offering financial empowerment programmes to help women gain independence, particularly when legal battles impact their livelihoods.
🔹 Social Justice – Challenging harmful cultural norms and advocating for gender equality in communities.
Beyond advocacy, Maggie shared how her work has shaped her leadership, motherhood, and faith. She emphasised the importance of recognising that women—whether in professional spaces, advocacy, or ministry—need both practical empowerment and spiritual resilience.
She also highlighted the power of delegation in leadership, acknowledging that balance is not about doing it all, but about knowing where to be fully present and when to trust others to carry the vision forward.
Her insights raise an important question: How can leaders, especially women, balance advocacy, leadership, and family life effectively?
